Michigan State coach Tom Izzo’s old-school approach paid off in a big way Friday night as the Spartans pulled off a crucial 75-62 victory over Michigan, sending them to the top of the Big Ten standings. With four games remaining, MSU is now alone in first place, and Izzo’s team has proven once again why they’re a force to be reckoned with.
The Wolverines, who were unbeaten at home and sitting atop the conference, came out strong with a 15-0 run in the first half. However, Izzo’s Spartans patiently waited for their opponents to get acclimated to the rivalry before unleashing a relentless attack on both ends of the court. The Spartans dominated the boards, grabbing 34 rebounds and limiting Michigan to just 25.
Freshman Jase Richardson made a significant impact in his starting role, scoring 21 points and snaring six rebounds without committing a turnover. Izzo praised Richardson’s performance, saying he “doesn’t act like a freshman, sophomore or junior.” The Spartans’ depth and ability to wear down opponents have been a hallmark of their season, and Friday night was no exception.
Michigan State’s defense has always been a strength, but they’ve also shown an impressive ability to adjust on the fly. Izzo’s staff, including former Michigan assistant Saddi Washington, did an excellent job of slowing down the Wolverines’ big men, Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin, who had flummoxed many opponents this season.
The Spartans will look to repeat their success against UM in a potential championship showdown on March 9. With four games remaining, MSU is well-positioned for another Big Ten title run. As Izzo said, “Our mindset is, get these next four and we’re Big Ten champions.”
