German Election 2025: Who’s Leading?

Germany’s federal election on February 23 will shape Europe’s largest economy after seven months of campaigning. The current governing “traffic light” coalition has collapsed, and support for all three parties involved has declined since the last election in September 2021.

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party Christian Social Union (CSU), as well as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and populist leftwing Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), are gaining ground in polls. The CDU/CSU duo is best placed to form a coalition, requiring only one additional partner to reach a majority.

According to the Financial Times poll tracker, the CDU/CSU combination would secure the most seats in the Bundestag, with the Greens or Social Democrats as potential partners. The FDP’s chances of entering the parliament are below 5%, making a renewed coalition unlikely.
