China Issues Warning to Planes Flying Over Live-Fire Exercises Off Australian East Coast

China has issued a “disconcerting” warning to planes flying above live-fire exercises conducted by three Chinese warships off the Australian east coast, according to Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles. The exercises took place in international waters outside Australia’s exclusive economic zone.

Marles stated that Australian authorities were not notified of the planned exercise until airlines reported the warnings they received from Chinese warships. All commercial flights involved were able to divert their routes safely without being put in danger.

The Chinese navy conducted a freedom of navigation exercise, similar to those exercised by the Australian military in disputed waters like the South China Sea. The exercise was reportedly carried out in compliance with international law and practice.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said there was no imminent risk of danger to any assets. New Zealand’s aviation regulator did not issue warnings, despite being aware of the Australian advice.

The incident highlights the growing presence of Chinese naval vessels in the region and their willingness to conduct military exercises without prior notice. Australian and New Zealand officials have expressed concern over these actions, which are seen as a demonstration of China’s capabilities.
