America’s gold reserves at Fort Knox have garnered significant public attention following comments from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who questioned the status of the $425 billion reserves. The US Bullion Depository at Fort Knox stores approximately 147.3 million ounces of gold, worth around $42.22 per ounce.
The facility, located in Kentucky, has been a secure and well-protected location since its establishment in 1937. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent assures that there is an annual audit to ensure all the gold is present and accounted for. However, some have raised concerns about access to the vaults, with only authorized personnel having viewed the gold reserves until recently.
Elon Musk sparked interest by suggesting a live tour of the facility, stating that it would be fun to see the public’s gold and verify its presence. The US Army’s human resources command center and largest annual training event are also held at Fort Knox. Despite concerns about access, the reputation of Fort Knox as an impenetrable vault has become a part of popular culture, featuring in cartoons and movies such as “Goldfinger.”
