Berlin Stabbing Suspect Had Antisemitic Motives

A 19-year-old Syrian refugee suspected of stabbing a Spanish tourist at Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial had antisemitic motives, police said. The suspect, who arrived in Germany as an unaccompanied minor in 2023, was planning to kill Jews for several weeks, according to his statements to the police.

The victim, a 30-year-old Spaniard, suffered serious injuries and is now out of critical condition after being placed in an artificial coma. Police said the suspect attacked him from behind at around 6 pm local time on Friday evening with a knife.

The stabbing occurred two days before a February 23 election, where migration and security have been major campaign topics. Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial, designed by Peter Eisenman and Buro Happold, is a regular tourist destination that commemorates the Jewish victims of the Holocaust.
