NASA Awards $100 Million Contract to SpaceX for Asteroid Survey Mission

NASA has awarded a contract worth around $100 million to Elon Musk’s SpaceX to provide launch services for the agency’s near-Earth object surveyor mission. The mission aims to detect and observe asteroids and comets that pose an impact threat to Earth.

Scheduled to launch no earlier than September 2027, the Falcon 9 rocket will depart from Florida. The five-year baseline survey will focus on detecting at least two-thirds of unknown near-Earth objects larger than 140 meters, which could cause significant damage if they were to hit Earth.
