Ukraine Marks Three Years of War as US Support Fades

Ukraine commemorates three years since its full-scale invasion by Russia, with the country’s future uncertain due to dwindling support from its strongest ally, the United States.

Kyiv is no longer sure it can rely on Washington for security guarantees, and officials have opened direct talks with Moscow in Saudi Arabia. However, US officials have made clear that they will not send troops as a guarantee if a peace deal emerges.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has held phone calls with European leaders to secure support and explore a way forward. Thousands of Ukrainian citizens have died, and over 6 million live as refugees abroad since the invasion began.

Military losses are estimated in the hundreds of thousands on both sides, although exact numbers are unknown. The war has taken a devastating toll on Ukraine’s people, with military funerals common in major cities and villages.

Ukrainian troops face a numerically superior foe, with questions over how much European allies can fill the gap if US support slows or stops. Ukrainian officials say the US contacts need to be enhanced at all levels.

The relationship between Zelenskiy and Trump has deteriorated due to the US president’s attacks on the Ukrainian leader. However, Zelenskiy remains popular in Ukraine, with over 50% of Ukrainians supporting him according to polls.

As the war enters its fourth year, Ukraine marks a critical turning point in its struggle for independence and security. The country’s future hangs in the balance, with no clear path forward due to dwindling US support.
