The US Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating a local pet store owner in Butler for allegedly importing and selling invasive giant snakeheads from Thailand. The owner has not been formally charged, but the agency’s actions indicate a serious concern over wildlife trafficking.
According to an affidavit, the investigation began in March 2021 after a tip about the store owner’s online sales of snakeheads. Native to Africa and Asia, giant snakeheads are considered invasive species that can outgrow aquariums and negatively impact native fish populations through predation and competition for resources.
The pet store owner allegedly referred to the snakeheads as “giant bettas” to avoid detection. However, emails and Facebook messages obtained by investigators reveal a different story, with the owner discussing sourcing, selling, and shipping thousands of young snakeheads at a time. The prices ranged from $50 to $60 per fish.
A search warrant was executed at both the pet store’s business location and the owner’s Milwaukee home earlier this month. This investigation highlights the growing concern over wildlife trafficking and the need for stricter regulations on exotic animal sales.
