Essex Honours Ukraine’s Anniversary of Invasion with Ceremony

Colchester, UK – To mark the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a city council in Essex held a ceremony to honour those affected by the conflict. The event, which took place on Monday at Colchester Town Hall, included Ukrainian songs, guest speakers, and a moment of silence.

Since February 24, 2022, people in Essex have welcomed over 3,000 refugees, with approximately 320 settling in Colchester. The city’s leaders praised the efforts of those who have provided shelter and support to Ukrainian families. “This is a great opportunity to show how Colchester values those who need help and those who help others,” said David King, Liberal Democrat leader of Colchester City Council.

Lauren Kilbey, whose family took in a Ukrainian refugee named Olaina and her daughter, described the experience as life-changing. The Kilbeys provided temporary accommodation after Olaina fled Kyiv during the early stages of the invasion and made their way to Poland before arriving in the UK.

The event also highlighted the wider support network across Essex, which has included councils, churches, community groups, and businesses offering free language courses, support groups, and professional development schemes. A street in Harlow was even renamed in honour of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Colchester’s ceremony is one of several events being held across the country to commemorate Ukraine’s invasion anniversary. The city’s leaders hope it will serve as a reminder of the importance of supporting refugees and those affected by conflict.
