The world witnessed a record-breaking year for internet shutdowns in 2024, with Myanmar, India, and Pakistan leading the list. According to a report by Access Now and the #KeepItOn coalition, these three countries accounted for over 64% of all recorded shutdowns.
Myanmar topped the list with 85 shutdowns, mostly imposed by the regime, while India followed closely with 84 shutdowns. Pakistan also saw a significant increase in shutdowns, with 21 instances reported, its highest ever.
The report highlights serious human rights abuses during these shutdowns, including 31 documented incidents in Myanmar that coincided with airstrikes on civilians. Bangladesh’s government was also criticized for imposing five shutdowns during student protests that resulted in over 1,000 deaths.
Malaysia and Thailand joined the list of countries that imposed internet shutdowns, blocking access to a popular dating app in Malaysia and disconnecting internet services in Myanmar and Laos.
The rise in internet shutdowns is concerning, particularly during times of misinformation. Access Now and the #KeepItOn coalition urge for transparency and accountability from governments.
