Trump Announces Plan to Audit US Gold Reserves at Fort Knox

President Donald Trump has announced his plan to visit Fort Knox, the largest gold reserve in the US, to “make sure the gold is there.” However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that an annual audit already exists and all gold is accounted for.

Fort Knox holds over 147 million ounces of gold, making it a significant storehouse for the country’s precious metal reserves. The base has previously been used to hold historic artifacts, including the Declaration of Independence and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address.

Despite Trump’s plan, Bessent clarified that there are no plans for an unannounced visit to Kentucky. An annual audit conducted in September 2024 revealed all gold is still present at the base. US senators can arrange a visit through the office if they wish.

Trump’s comments follow pressure from Elon Musk on social media, who criticized the lack of an annual audit determining the amount of gold at Fort Knox. The last audit took place in September 1974, when several Congressional representatives assured the public that the supply remained intact.
