Google Overhauls 2-Billion Gmail Users’ Login Process

Google is introducing a new security update to its email service, affecting nearly 2 billion users. The company will replace the current SMS-based login procedure with a QR code system over the next few months.

The move aims to reduce “rampant, global SMS abuse” and follows Google’s goal of moving beyond passwords for authentication. Users will see a QR code displayed on their screen, which they need to scan using their phone’s camera app to verify their identity.

The change is part of Google’s efforts to enhance security and reduce vulnerabilities. The company notes that SMS codes can be a source of risk for users, as cybercriminals may use phishing attacks or exploit users who don’t have access to the device receiving the code.

Two-step verification has been mandatory for 1.8 billion Gmail users worldwide since its introduction. However, this hasn’t completely eliminated security risks, with fraudsters discovering ways to bypass the system. The new QR code approach is designed to keep users safer from malicious activity and attacks.
