A multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections has been linked to frozen supplemental shakes sold in the US. The FDA and CDC have reported at least 38 people infected with the bacteria across 21 states, resulting in 37 hospitalizations. Twelve deaths have been confirmed.
The Sysco Imperial and Lyons ReadyCare shakes were manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. in Indiana and distributed mainly to hospitals and long-term care facilities. A recall has been issued for these products due to high levels of Listeria bacteria.
Investigations began in 2018, but the outbreak was re-launched in October after six new cases emerged. The CDC warns that there may be more cases than reported. To protect against infection, people are advised to clean areas contaminated with recalled products and avoid consuming them.
Symptoms of Listeria infection can include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, stiff neck, headache, confusion, or seizures. In severe cases, antibiotics may be necessary. The CDC reports that Listeria is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the US, claiming about 260 lives annually.
Those at highest risk of severe outcomes are older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. If symptoms develop after consuming contaminated products, medical attention should be sought immediately.
