NFL Considers Banning “Tush Push” Play Due to Injury Concerns

A proposal has been submitted to ban the “Tush Push,” a popular quarterback sneak play used by the Philadelphia Eagles, from the NFL due to concerns over player safety and injury risks. The play involves two teammates pushing the quarterback forward after he receives the snap, allowing him to gain extra yardage.

The play’s effectiveness was highlighted during the NFC Championship Game, where it drew Washington offside on multiple consecutive attempts. However, its popularity has also raised eyebrows among opponents, leading to a proposal by NFL EVP of football operations Troy Vincent to outlaw the play.

Opponents argue that the play can be hazardous, particularly if executed incorrectly or without proper training. Bills head coach Sean McDermott expressed similar concerns during his news conference at the Scouting Combine, stating that he believes player safety should be prioritized and that the play’s techniques may be “contrary to the health and safety of our players.”

The competition committee will consider the proposal over the next month before deciding on a course of action. A vote is expected to take place during the Annual League Meeting, which begins on March 30.
