Medications for Depression May Worsen Dementia in Older Adults

A new study by researchers at Karolinska Institute in Sweden has found a possible link between antidepressant medications and increased risk of dementia, fractures, and earlier death in older adults with depression. The study analyzed data from 18,740 newly diagnosed dementia patients between 2007 and 2018 and found that higher doses of Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were associated with faster cognitive decline. However, the researchers did not find a similar link with Serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). The study highlights the need for further research on the risks and benefits of antidepressant medications in dementia patients and underscores the importance of consulting with a doctor before making any changes to medication regimens.
