Mysterious Disease Spreads in DRC, Kills 53 People Within Days

A deadly and mysterious illness has killed over 50 people within hours in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) data. The disease, which began on January 21, has reported 419 cases and a staggering fatality rate of 12.49 percent.

The outbreak has raised concerns about another virus jumping from animals to humans, particularly in regions where wild animals are commonly consumed. Initial reports showed that three children who ate a bat died within 48 hours after displaying haemorrhagic fever symptoms.

While the WHO tested samples for Ebola and other diseases, none were found positive. However, some cases tested positive for malaria. This is not the first time a similar mystery illness has appeared in Africa, with a flu-like illness claiming dozens of lives last year that was likely identified as malaria.

The rapid spread of this disease highlights concerns about emerging health threats, particularly in regions with limited healthcare resources.
