NFL Considers Banning “Tush Push” Play

The Green Bay Packers have submitted a proposal to ban the “tush push” play, also known as the “Brotherly Shove,” which is a designed quarterback run used by the Philadelphia Eagles in short-yardage situations. The play involves Jalen Hurts taking a snap and diving forward while being pushed from behind by teammates.

The league’s competition committee discussed the play ahead of the 2023 season, but it was not put up for a vote at the time. In December, NFL executive Jeff Miller said there was no notable increase in injury risk due to the play. The Eagles have found success with the play, finishing last season with the fourth-best fourth-down conversion rate and tied for second in rushing touchdowns.

Former Eagles lineman Jason Kelce believes the team will find other ways to pick up short yardage if the push is banned. Despite this, the Eagles remain one of the most successful teams in yard-to-go situations over the past three seasons. The NFL’s stance on the play remains unclear, but it has become a topic of discussion around the league.
