Renowned sports broadcaster Al Trautwig has passed away at 68, leaving behind a legacy of over three decades in international sporting events. His son confirmed that Trautwig died on Sunday from complications related to cancer.
Trautwig was a staple in MSG’s Knicks, Rangers, and Yankees coverage for over 30 years, known for his passionate storytelling style during pregame introductions at Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium. Fellow analyst Alan Hahn described him as “a skilled host who knew how to make every game feel like something you don’t want to miss.”
Trautwig’s remarkable career spanned numerous high-profile events, including 16 Olympics, the Indianapolis 500, and the US Open tennis tournament. He won four national Emmy Awards and more than 30 in New York.
MSG Networks released a statement praising Trautwig as “a staple on MSG Networks’ Knicks, Rangers and Yankees coverage for over 30 years” with an “undeniable passion for the teams he covered.” The sports community mourns the loss of this iconic voice in broadcasting.
