Red Wings Trade Ville Husso to Ducks for Salary Cap Relief

The Detroit Red Wings have traded goaltender Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for salary cap relief. The deal comes just over a week before the 2025 NHL trade deadline, which is set for March 7.

Husso, who was taking up space on the team’s minor league roster, had been demoted from the main squad in October after posting a mediocre 1-5-2 record in nine games. He still managed to excel at the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he posted an impressive 8-4-0 record with two shutouts.

The trade brings some much-needed salary cap relief to the Wings, as Husso’s contract was set to expire soon and his average annual value of $4.75 million would have taken up significant space on the roster. With the deal, Detroit now has nearly $11 million in available cap space, a welcome boost just before the deadline.

The return from Anaheim is minimal, with the team opting for “future considerations.” The Wings will likely look to make further moves before the trade deadline to bolster their roster and make a push for the playoffs.
