Starbucks is overhauling its menu starting March 4 in an effort to speed up service and reduce strain on baristas. The coffee chain will remove less popular hot, cold, and blended drinks to focus on fewer, more popular items. This move aims to improve quality, consistency, and customer experience.
According to chief executive officer Brian Niccol’s letter to employees, the goal is to streamline company operations by reducing complexity and increasing accountability. The decision is part of a broader plan to eliminate 30% of its U.S. menu by the end of the fiscal year in September.
Thirteen drinks are being phased out from the menu, including the Iced Matcha Lemonade, Espresso Frappuccino, and Java Chip Frappuccino. Alternative options have been suggested for each, allowing customers to customize their drinks with similar flavors or ingredients.
Customers can expect mobile ordering changes as well, including a maximum of 12 items per order and reduced customization options. The company is also focusing on improving the customer experience by returning to its coffeehouse roots, making stores feel cozier, and adding handwritten notes to cups for “to stay” orders.
