Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has suspended its operations in a famine-stricken camp in Sudan’s North Darfur region due to increased violence. The medical charity, which is one of the few humanitarian groups still working in the camp, said fighting in and around Zamzam camp had made it “impossible” to provide medical assistance.
The MSF field hospital in Zamzam has treated over 1,000 patients with gunshot wounds this month, including 11 who died due to a lack of equipment. The organisation’s ambulances have also been targeted in recent months.
MSF’s Sudan country director, Yahya Kalilah, said the decision to suspend operations was “heartbreaking” but necessary due to the violent attacks and difficulties in sending supplies. The war in Sudan has killed tens of thousands of people and forced 14 million to flee their homes.
The conflict has also led to a humanitarian crisis, with widespread starvation and immense needs for aid. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of further escalation after the RSF-led government was announced, deepening the fragmentation of the country.
MSF’s suspension comes as the RSF continues to focus on the western region of Darfur while losing ground elsewhere. The organisation’s decision highlights the dire situation in Sudan and the need for continued aid efforts in the face of escalating violence.
