EU to Unveil New Ukraine Arms Package at Emergency Summit

EU leaders are set to discuss a new package of arms for Ukraine at an emergency summit next week. The bloc’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said Monday that several Western countries have broadly supported the initiative, with no firm figure yet agreed upon.

The EU’s diplomatic arm has raised the current €20 billion ($21 billion) annual aid as a benchmark, but diplomats say some countries are pushing for higher figures. Hungary, however, has already stated opposition to the initiative, citing concerns that it would prolong the war.

Despite this, Nordic and Baltic countries have pledged to increase military aid to Ukraine, including Finland’s €4.5 million for restoring social and public infrastructure, and Denmark’s €270 million in aid.

Other Western countries have also announced new aid packages, including Spain’s €1 billion in military aid for 2025, the UK’s £4.5 billion in military assistance, and Canada’s $5 billion from frozen Russian assets.

The countries have pledged to provide additional support for Ukraine, including equipment and training for a scalable brigade-sized unit, and investment in Ukraine’s defense industry. The Norwegian government said it plans to use 3.5 billion kroner ($315 million) for purchases directly from Ukraine’s defense industry.

EU leaders will discuss the details of the new package at their emergency summit on March 6. Kallas said that “we have to put Ukraine in a position of strength so that Ukraine is able to say no to a bad deal.”
