Google Ditches SMS Codes for Gmail Authentication

Google is set to replace its traditional SMS code method for verifying Gmail accounts with QR codes that users can scan on their devices. This move aims to reduce the risks of phishing, cybercrime, and phone carrier breaches associated with using SMS codes. The new approach will also make users less reliant on their carriers.

According to Google’s head of security and privacy, Ross Richendrfer, the company wants to eliminate instances of users sharing their SMS code with scammers who have tricked them. Additionally, this change is expected to reduce global SMS abuse and cybercrime.

Google has been signaling a transition away from SMS since 2017 and joins other companies such as Evernote, Signal, X, Apple, and Microsoft in abandoning the method. Cybersecurity experts say this move is necessary for stronger protection against cyber threats.

Using an authenticator app on a mobile device provides a more secure way to utilize two-factor authentication. The new QR code-based approach will provide a safer environment for users, making them less vulnerable to scams and cyberattacks.
