Israel is seeking to extend a 42-day ceasefire agreement with Hamas in Gaza, but faces skepticism from Israeli officials over its feasibility. The current truce, set to expire on Saturday, would require further hostage releases in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
Meanwhile, Gaza has been hit by extreme cold temperatures, resulting in the deaths of six infants in the past two weeks. Palestinian medics report that two more infants were treated for frostbite at hospitals, with one still in intensive care.
The ceasefire is under pressure due to a recent film released by Hamas, which infuriated public opinion in Israel. The group has demanded the release of 600 Palestinians who were postponed last weekend, putting mediators under pressure to resolve the dispute before Thursday’s scheduled release of four Israeli bodies.
Egypt, a key mediator between the sides, refuses to discuss an extension of the first phase unless phase two talks begin at the same time. US envoy Steve Witkoff is set to return to the region on Wednesday, aiming for an extension of stage one to ensure there is time to negotiate stage two.
Stage two involves Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza and the start of talks on future governance. However, the sides remain far apart on Gaza’s future. Hamas has expressed willingness to give up control of the territory, but its leadership refuses to go into exile.
