Mira Murati’s $9 Billion Startup Thinking Machine Labs Raises $1 Billion

Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati has debuted her new startup, Thinking Machine Labs, aiming to raise $1 billion at a valuation of $9 billion. The round is still in progress, and details could change. Murati’s journey began as OpenAI’s CTO for six years, working on ChatGPT and other AI research initiatives. She was briefly appointed interim CEO before returning to her role.

After leaving OpenAI last year, the exact path of Murati’s new venture was unknown. However, a blog post from Murati revealed Thinking Machine Labs’ focus is on making AI more accessible through research and product development. The startup has attracted top talent, including former OpenAI executives like John Schulman, Jonathan Lachman, Barret Zoph, and Alexander Kirillov.

Murati joins a group of former OpenAI executives who have started their own companies. Ilya Sutskever co-founded Safe Superintelligence Inc., while Dario and Daniela Amodei founded Anthropic in 2021.
