Former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati has launched an AI startup called Thinking Machines Lab, with a team of 30 leading researchers and engineers from competitors including OpenAI, Meta, and Mistral. The company aims to build artificial intelligence systems that encode human values and have broader applications than rivals.
Thinking Machines Lab’s approach differs from competitors in that it involves co-design by the research and product teams, resulting in more adaptable AI systems. The startup plans to contribute to research on AI alignment by sharing code, datasets, and model specifications.
The company has been in talks to raise venture capital funding from investors and expects more OpenAI employees to join its team. Co-founder John Schulman, who left OpenAI for rival Anthropic, will serve as the startup’s chief scientist. Mira Murati will be CEO of Thinking Machines Lab, marking another move by a former OpenAI executive to launch an AI startup.
The company’s focus on encoding human values into AI models aims to make them safer and more reliable. With its co-design approach, Thinking Machines Lab is poised to differentiate itself in the crowded AI startup space.
