Seven Planets Line Up in Night Sky for February Parade

A rare astronomical event is happening in February, with seven planets aligning in the night sky. While some will be difficult to spot with the naked eye, others can be seen with binoculars and telescopes.

NASA says a parade of four or five visible planets occurs every few years, but this month’s lineup features Venus, Mars, and Jupiter as visible to the naked eye. Saturn and Mercury are close to the horizon, making them hard to spot without special equipment. Uranus and Neptune can be seen with binoculars and telescopes.

To catch the sighting, head outside on a clear night after sunset, when the planets will shine brighter than stars. Mars will appear as a reddish-orange dot. Stargazing apps can help you find the best viewing spots. This alignment is part of a relatively common phenomenon that happens at least once a year.
