Mira Murati Launches Thinking Machines Lab to Democratize AI

Mira Murati, the former chief technology officer of OpenAI, has announced the launch of a new public benefit corporation called Thinking Machines Lab. The mission of this lab is to develop top-notch AI with an emphasis on making it useful and accessible to everyone. Murati believes that there’s a significant gap between rapidly advancing AI and the public’s understanding of the technology.

Thinking Machines Lab plans to address this gap by building accessibility into its work from the start. The company will share its research, technical notes, papers, and code with the world, aiming to fill the knowledge gap that even sophisticated scientists face when it comes to AI’s capabilities and limitations. Murati’s strategy is also driven by her belief that we are still in the early stages of AI development, and new entrants can compete with more-efficient models.

The lab will focus on high-end large language models but acknowledges that unlocking transformative applications requires upscaling model capabilities to their highest potential. Thinking Machines Lab has assembled an impressive team of researchers and scientists from top institutions, including OpenAI, Google, and Mistral AI.

Led by John Schulman, a key ChatGPT inventor, the lab is working on projects that optimize collaboration between humans and AI systems. This approach, inspired by American inventor Danny Hillis’s vision of 30 years ago, aims to overcome the current bottleneck in AI development. With Murati at the helm, Thinking Machines Lab is poised to make significant contributions to democratizing AI for the benefit of society.
