The researchers found that only 15% of the posts mentioned potential harms, while around two-thirds came from accounts with financial incentives to promote the products. Experts warn that this could lead to overdiagnosis and costly procedures for patients who may not actually need them.
Influencers like Kim Kardashian have posted about their experiences with these tests, claiming they have saved their lives or helped them achieve better health outcomes. However, experts say that these personal stories can be misleading and do not necessarily reflect the scientific evidence.
To avoid falling prey to these misleading promotions, researchers recommend taking a critical approach when encountering medical test discussions on social media. Ask yourself if the post is trying to convince you of something rather than providing information, and consider whether it acknowledges what scientists don’t yet know about the test or topic.
