Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the shutdown of three video game development studios, including Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. The move comes after disappointing sales from recent releases, with CEO JB Perrette stating that quality has “missed the mark” and the company needs to make changes.
Monolith Productions, based in Washington, was known for titles like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and F.E.A.R. before being acquired by Warner Bros. Games in 2004. Player First Games, which developed the free-to-play game Multiversus, recorded a nearly $100-million impairment charge due to poor performance.
The shutdown follows other reductions within WB Games, including the laying off of nearly 100 workers at Montreal’s On Animation Studios last month. Despite this, Warner Bros. still owns nine video game studios and will report fourth-quarter earnings soon, which may provide further insight into its future strategy.
