Apple has admitted to a bug in its automatic dictation tool that suggested the word “Trump” when users said “racist”. The glitch was first spotted on TikTok and later shared on social media, causing outrage among some conservative commentators.
The issue is attributed to phonetic overlap, where words with similar sounds can be mistakenly displayed. Apple plans to roll out a fix, saying it’s aware of the problem and taking steps to address it.
The bug has raised concerns about Apple’s artificial intelligence capabilities and its recent $500bn investment in the US, which some see as an attempt to appease President Trump’s administration. The company is also facing tariffs on its devices due to China imports.
This incident follows a pattern of companies rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion measures in response to executive orders signed by Trump during his first term. However, Apple shareholders rejected a proposal to drop the company’s own DEI programs last year.
