Israeli Ceasefire Talks Spark Disagreement Over Safety Guarantees

Israel’s security cabinet is set to discuss a 60-day ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, but some officials are expressing concerns over safety guarantees. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed “in principle” to the negotiations, but local leaders in the north are warning that the threat of violence remains.

The mayor of Metula, in Israel’s northern region, has urged residents not to return and asked Netanyahu to reconsider the deal, saying the reality on October 7 was too volatile. Former defence minister Benny Gantz has also called for Netanyahu to convene authorities in the north rather than his coalition leaders.

This comes as around 60,000 people have been evacuated from northern Israel since October last year due to frequent exchanges of fire with Hamas in Gaza. The return of these residents was an official war goal set by Israel in September.
