The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turke, has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, stating there is “no justification” for the war. Turke accused Israel and Hamas of violating human rights and ignoring humanitarian law since the October 7 massacre. He also expressed doubt that Israel would accept full accountability for alleged unlawful killings.
Turke listed various Palestinian war crimes, including taking hostages, torturing them, firing indiscriminate projectiles into Israel, and potentially committing additional crimes by co-locating military objectives with civilians. The UN official emphasized holding perpetrators accountable to prevent future atrocities.
Turke criticized the US attempt to outlaw the UNRWA agency and sanctions against the International Criminal Court. He warned that delegitimizing international institutions harms everyone. Turke also rejected proposals to annex Palestinian land or forcibly transfer civilians, calling for voices of reason to prevail in seeking justice, compassion, and truth-telling.
