Israeli Tanks Enter Jenin, Displace 40,000 Palestinians

Israeli tanks have entered the northern West Bank town of Jenin for the first time in over two decades, displacing more than 40,000 Palestinians from their homes in the refugee camps. The military operation has also killed at least 51 Palestinians, including seven children, and injured three Israeli soldiers.

The operation, known as Iron Wall, is aimed at stamping out militancy but Palestinians fear it is a permanent displacement of the territory’s population and possible annexation. The Islamic Jihad group says the deployment of tanks confirms Israel’s plans to annex the West Bank by force.

Demolition of large areas of the Jenin refugee camp has already begun, and many residents who fled have taken shelter in crowded mosques and schools. The International Committee of the Red Cross said many displaced residents face access to basic needs such as clean water, food, medical care, and shelter, making it difficult to survive during the winter cold.

The United Nations has rejected calls for annexation and expressed concern over the rising violence in the West Bank. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also expressed her concerns. The situation remains tense, with Israeli hardliners pushing for outright annexation of the West Bank. A possible announcement from former US President Donald Trump is expected soon.
