UK suspends aid to Rwanda over backing rebel group in DR Congo

The UK has suspended some aid to Rwanda due to its support of a rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo). The decision is seen as “punitive” by Rwandan authorities, who claim the measures will do nothing to help the conflict.

Rwanda backs M23, a rebel group that has captured large areas of DR Congo. Over 7,000 people have died and hundreds of thousands fled their homes since the conflict escalated in January. The UK’s decision comes after Rwanda recently adopted a more defensive stance on its involvement with the group.

The UK says the humanitarian situation in DR Congo is “critical” and will halt bilateral aid to Rwanda, excluding support for the poorest. Other measures include investigating potential sanctions and suspending future defence training assistance until significant progress is made to end hostilities and withdraw Rwandan troops.

UN estimates suggest around 3,000-4,000 Rwandan troops are in eastern DR Congo. The US has already imposed sanctions on two Rwandan officials, accusing them of supporting the rebel group.

Rwanda’s foreign ministry rejects the US accusations, calling the sanctions “unjustified”. The UK and Rwanda had previously enjoyed good relations, but the decision to suspend aid marks a significant shift.
