President-elect Donald Trump will take office on January 20. Here’s a key timeline of events leading up to his inauguration.
A federal law passed in 2022 requires states to submit their certified presidential elector slates by December 11. Electors, who make up the Electoral College, will meet in their respective states on December 17 to select the president and vice president. The electoral votes must be received by December 25 by the President of the Senate, currently Vice President Kamala Harris.
To prevent a repeat of the January 6, 2021, events where supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop certification of President Joe Biden’s victory, Congress has passed reforms requiring approval from one-fifth of both the House and Senate to challenge a state’s election results.
On January 20, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will take their oaths of office during a swearing-in ceremony at 12 p.m. ET.
