The New York Giants are exploring options for a veteran quarterback after striking out in talks with Matthew Stafford, sources told ESPN on Friday. The team is reportedly considering free agent Aaron Rodgers, who will be available as a free agent after the New York Jets announce they will no longer be carrying him.
Rodgers’ presence would provide the Giants with a mentor and reliable option to complement their young quarterback, Sam Darnold, who had a breakout season with the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants were initially interested in Darnold last season but ultimately signed Drew Lock as backup.
The team’s general manager, Joe Schoen, expressed a willingness to add a veteran quarterback via free agency to prevent “draft-for-need” and focus on selecting the best player available in the upcoming NFL draft. With the No. 3 pick in the draft, the Giants will be looking to build around their young quarterbacks.
Rodgers, who won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks, has been considered by other teams during this offseason, including the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams. However, it appears the Jets are set to release him after the 2024 season, pending a post-June 1 designation.
