$250 Million Animated Series Arcane Sets New Record

Riot Games’ animated series Arcane has become the most expensive animated TV series ever, with a production budget of $250 million for two seasons. The show’s unique animation style and its ability to blend 2D and 3D styles have been praised by critics and fans alike.

Despite the high cost, Arcane is not expected to turn a profit for Riot Games. However, its success lies in areas beyond just financial gain. The series has won numerous awards, including nine Annie Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards, and has built a massive audience on Netflix, with both seasons claiming a spot in the platform’s Top 10 charts.

Arcane’s production budget is not only significant but also well-spent, given the level of detail and visual prowess it achieves. The show’s French animation studio Fortiche had to expand from 15 employees to around 300 to complete animation for Season 1, resulting in one of the most visually distinct animation studios working today.

While Arcane’s budget may seem high compared to some blockbuster movies, it’s worth noting that the series was produced over two seasons and features a lot more content than a typical movie. The show’s success has also had flow-on effects on Riot’s League of Legends franchise, with sales of the game increasing following the release.

Arcane’s co-creator Marc Merill reaffirmed that the company is committed to its entertainment offerings, despite the high budget. Despite the challenges of maintaining Arcane’s level of quality, Riot believes it was a worthwhile investment, as it provided animators with multiple years of work and resulted in a series that will not be forgotten.

Arcane Season 2 will conclude on Netflix on November 23, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what’s to come next.
