China is testing its military capabilities in the Pacific, staging exercises near Australia and Vietnam that have sent a clear message: Beijing will not wait for the US to decide how hard it wants to counter China.
The recent drills were relatively brief but highlight China’s growing naval capabilities and ability to project power across multiple theaters. Experts say the timing is “perfect” as many in the Indo-Pacific region are concerned about US commitments under President Donald Trump.
China has been increasing its military presence in the Asia-Pacific for years, and the recent exercises are part of a broader effort to persuade governments that their future lies in accommodating Beijing. This includes China’s claims on Taiwan and other territorial disputes.
Australia, a key ally of the US, is caught between its trade partnership with China and its defense relationship with the US. The arrival of Chinese warships near Australian territory was seen as a setback and a sign of intimidation.
Taiwan, which relies heavily on US military support, is also feeling the strain. Mr. Trump’s recent comments on Taiwan have magnified anxieties among Taiwanese policymakers, who are concerned about his willingness to defend the island.
The US has traditionally avoided committing to intervene in a war over Taiwan, but President Biden had repeatedly stated that Washington would intervene. However, under President Trump, this policy is being undermined by demands for Taiwan to increase its military spending and attention on bargaining with China’s leader, Xi Jinping.
As the US shifts its priorities, China is taking advantage of the uncertainty to assert its power in the Pacific. The region is watching closely as Beijing continues to test its capabilities and challenge the existing balance of power.
