Thailand has faced international condemnation for its forced return of at least 40 Uyghur asylum seekers to China, a country notorious for widespread persecution, torture, and forced labor against the Muslim minority group. The UN Convention Against Torture and International Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance are at risk of being breached by this action.
The Thai government’s move is seen as inconsistent with its commitment to human rights and runs counter to the country’s traditional protection of vulnerable groups. We urge governments worldwide not to forcibly return ethnic Uyghurs to China, which has committed genocide and crimes against humanity under the Chinese Communist Party’s direction.
For the well-being of the returned Uyghurs to be verified regularly, we call on the Chinese authorities to provide full access. The Thai government must also insist that these protections are in place, ensuring the human rights of the Uyghurs are safeguarded.
