Comedian and conservative commentator Bill Maher criticized the “no-spend day” protest organized by a group called People’s Union USA, calling it “so f—– stupid.” The event, which took place on February 28, involved participants refraining from making any purchases for a full day in an effort to protest big corporations and the system as a whole.
Maher was joined by former Democratic Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and CNN host Fared Zakaria, who suggested that Democrats need to find ways to win elections. Zakaria pointed out that some have used interpretive dance to protest the president, but noted that this approach is unlikely to be effective. The group’s focus on economic issues, rather than winning elections, was seen as misguided.
Emmanuel also expressed his disappointment with the Democratic Party, which he believes has taken a wrong turn by embracing identity politics and focusing on niche liberal issues rather than addressing more pressing problems such as crime and education.
