Microsoft Improves Windows 11’s Start Menu with Easier File Sharing and Layout Options

Microsoft has introduced a new preview build for Windows 11 (Build 22635.4950), which brings some useful changes to its interface. Two of these updates focus on file sharing and the Start menu.

A fresh piece of the interface now makes it easier to share files by presenting a selection of icons, such as WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams, and My Phone, whenever you’re dragging a file out of a folder on the desktop. Dropping a file onto any of these icons instantly shares it via that medium.

The Start menu also receives a makeover with two new layout options: grid and category views. The grid view sticks to an alphabetical ordering of your apps but allows for more apps to be displayed, reducing scrolling. In contrast, the category view groups your apps by usage levels, such as social apps, productivity, or entertainment, with frequently used apps highlighted.

These features are still in testing and not yet available to all testers; however, they will roll out to Dev builds, Beta channel, and eventually the general release of Windows 11. Microsoft has also applied bug fixes and improved accessibility features, including enhanced text size scaling for File Explorer.

While these changes may not be present in every test build, both new file sharing options and layout modifications are considered useful additions that could enhance user experience. As these features approach final testing in the Release Preview channel, they will eventually become available to Windows 11 users.
