The promotional picture featured “AI jankiness” and was easily recognizable as machine-generated, leading to widespread criticism. This incident brought together both pro-AI and anti-AI groups, with critics labeling the use of outdated AI models in 2022 as particularly egregious.
Activision initially deleted their social media post but made the image accessible via a direct link. The community also spotted AI-generated ads for non-existent mobile games, including Call of Duty Zombies: Mobile and Crash Bandicoot Brawl. The developer has not officially commented on the matter.
The backlash highlights Activision’s tendency to cut costs with subpar AI “art,” which is hard to counter with arguments supporting its use. The community’s response underscores that, while some may appreciate AI-generated content, poor execution can still have significant consequences.
