The US is taking steps to counter China’s increasing maritime dominance in the global trade system. This comes after more than 150 years of foreign powers, including the British, imposing their rules and systems on China.
Historically, Japan was also forced into a similar situation by an American ultimatum in the 1850s, but it took a different approach. Instead of relying on Western trading houses, Japan built its own, which have thrived to this day. These indigenous trading companies are still going strong, with Warren Buffett being a notable fan. The US is now following in Japan’s footsteps by promoting its own maritime trade and challenging China’s growing influence at sea.
