Tennessee’s Jahmai Mashack hit a game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Volunteers a 79-76 victory over Alabama in a thrilling matchup. The Crimson Tide led by two points with 36 seconds remaining, but Tennessee’s defense came up big on their final possession, preventing a turnover and setting up the winning shot.
The Tide had two timeouts remaining, but coach Nate Oats’ decision to sub in his bigs for the rebound proved costly. “It’s on me,” Oats said after the game. “I should’ve called timeout before four seconds were left.” The loss deals a blow to Alabama’s chances of securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Tennessee moves ahead in the SEC standings, while Houston and Florida remain in contention for a top spot. The Volunteers will look to build on their win over Alabama with a visit to Ole Miss on Wednesday.
Mashack finished with 11 points, including the game-winning shot, which was his only attempt from beyond the arc all game. Tennessee improves to 24-5 overall and 11-5 in conference, while Alabama falls to 23-6 overall and 12-4 in the SEC.
