Joe Highsmith won his maiden PGA Tour title at the Cognizant Classic, with his caddie, Joe LaCava Jr., playing a crucial role in his success. The son of Fred Couples’ former caddie and Patrick Cantlay’s current looper carried Highsmith’s bag on the Korn Ferry Tour two years ago and helped him secure his PGA Tour card.
LaCava Jr. took a chance on Highsmith after their initial meeting, which led to them working together during the Fall series. The partnership proved fruitful, with Highsmith going on to play well in the final stretch of the season.
However, it wasn’t until LaCava Jr.’s involvement that Highsmith found his rhythm. After missing three cuts in the first five starts of the 2025 season, LaCava Jr.’s guidance helped him turn around his form. A T17 finish in Mexico set the tone for their partnership, and Highsmith’s momentum carried over into the Cognizant Classic.
Highsmith credits LaCava Jr. with keeping him relaxed under pressure. “I had high pressure out there, being able to have him kind of keeping me relaxed and whatever, it feels like you’re just out there walking with one of your friends,” Highsmith said. The 24-year-old golfer believes that LaCava Jr.’s calm demeanor helped him stay focused on the task at hand.
LaCava Jr., who took a more direct approach to caddying after exploring other options, has found success with his partnership with Highsmith. “He’s a great caddie,” Highsmith said. The 24-year-old golfer also appreciates LaCava Jr.’s down-to-earth personality. “We have a pretty good time out there, and he just keeps it light.”
