Fulham’s Bernd Leno was the hero with two crucial saves in a penalty shootout to send his side into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, knocking out Manchester United in the process.
The match went to extra time after both teams created numerous scoring opportunities. Fulham took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Calvin Bassey headed in from close range, but Bruno Fernandes equalised with a superb strike before the end of the 90 minutes.
Fulham goalkeeper Leno denied Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee’s efforts to send the match to extra time. However, both teams could have won it without needing penalties. United substitute Chido Obi was repelled by Leno, while Emile Smith Rowe’s superb effort was saved by Andre Onana.
The match ultimately went to a penalty shootout, which Fulham won thanks to Leno’s heroics. The win sets up a quarter-final tie against Nottingham Forest or Ipswich tomorrow.
Fulham boss Marco Silva praised his team’s maturity and depth, saying they are “in a better place” than when they were knocked out at Old Trafford two seasons ago. The win is Fulham’s first FA Cup quarter-final appearance since 1975, marking an unexpected turn of events in the competition.
