A benefit figure skating event held in Washington, D.C., paid tribute to the 67 victims of a plane crash that killed many young skaters and their families. The event, Legacy on Ice, featured dozens of top skaters who gathered to honor the victims. Max Naumov, whose parents were among the dead, dropped to his knees during his performance, overcome with emotion.
Many skaters, including Olympic gold medalists Kristi Yamaguchi and Brian Boitano, paid their respects by performing and participating in the event. Peggy Fleming, Nancy Kerrigan, Johnny Weir, and defending world champion Ilia Malinin were also among those who attended. Scott Hamilton led a prayer to pray for the victims’ families.
The idea behind Legacy on Ice was born out of a sense of duty after Ari Zakarian, Ilia Malinin’s agent, saw news of the crash on social media. He wanted to do something to help the victims and their families. Ticket proceeds from the sold-out event will go to support the victims’ families, skating communities affected by the tragedy, and emergency workers in Washington.
Skaters like Ashley Cain, Jason Brown, and Isabella Aparicio paid tribute to the victims during their performances, with some even performing in tears. The event showed that great skaters can come together to mourn and support others.
