Arab League Convenes Emergency Summit to Counter US, Israeli Threats Over Gaza Reconstruction

An emergency Arab summit has been convened by Egypt to discuss a reconstruction plan for Gaza that avoids ethnic cleansing. The summit aims to present an alternative response to the United States president’s threats of taking over Gaza and expelling Palestinians from their land, as well as Israel’s willingness to destroy the ceasefire and resume a genocidal war on Gaza.

The Egyptian plan, which has been endorsed by Jordan’s King Abdullah II, proposes a comprehensive approach to rebuilding Gaza while ensuring Palestinian rights. The plan involves three technical phases: early recovery, rebuilding utility infrastructure, and housing reconstruction, service provision, and establishing a “political track” for the two-state solution.

However, financing the plan poses significant challenges, with estimates suggesting that over $50 billion would be needed to rebuild Gaza. Arab countries are expected to play a key role in securing funding and goodwill to implement the Egyptian plan.

The summit comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Israel blocking humanitarian aid to Gaza on the second day of Ramadan. The Gaza ceasefire, which was agreed upon in January after 15 months of intense killing and bombardment, is still fragile, and reconstruction efforts may have to be put on hold while mediators attempt to ensure that Israel’s war on Gaza does not resume.

The Arab League has a history of making significant contributions to the Palestinian cause, with past summits leading to important milestones such as the establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the recognition of the PLO as the sole representative of the Palestinian people.
