Gene Hackman’s Cause of Death Remains Undetermined

Gene Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, and his wife Betsy Arakawa died in their home in New Mexico on February 26. The cause of death remains under investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

According to investigators, Hackman’s pacemaker stopped functioning nine days before they were found dead. However, toxicology reports showed that he tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning. The sheriff’s office has also stated that there was no sign of blunt force trauma or foul play.

A search warrant issued at the time of their discovery revealed signs of decomposition and bloating in Hackman’s face. Betsy Arakawa’s body showed mummification on her hands and feet, a natural process that occurs when skin dries out after death. The sheriff stated that it is unclear whether this was a result of her cause of death.

Hackman’s dog was also found dead, with its cause remaining undetermined. Two other dogs were found alive at the property.

No signs of forced entry or carbon monoxide leaks were detected at the scene. Deputies initially responded to a report from someone who arrived for maintenance and did not receive an answer.

Gene Hackman had a long and distinguished career in film, starring in notable roles such as Detective “Popeye” Doyle in “The French Connection” and a sheriff in Clint Eastwood’s “Unforgiven.” He won Academy Awards for his performances. Hackman retired from acting in 2004 and wrote or co-authored adventure and historical novels.

Betsy Arakawa was a concert pianist and co-founder of Pandora’s, a home decor store in Santa Fe. The couple met while she worked at a California fitness center in the 1980s. They had three children together before divorcing.

Hackman passed away on February 26, leaving behind his family and fans around the world who will miss him sorely.
